You Sent Your Banking Details and the Chat Went Quiet. Here Is How to Ask for a Deposit.

To ask for a deposit on WhatsApp without losing the booking, send one message with five things: the amount, what it secures, that it comes off the final price, how long you will hold the slot, and the easiest way to pay. A bare list of banking details with no deadline is where most bookings stall.

You know this chat. She asked about a December slot. You sent the price. She said "Perfect, let's do it!" So you sent your banking details.

Account name, bank, account number, branch code, "please use your name as reference".

Two blue ticks. Then nothing. Not that day, not that week. The slot sits in your diary with her name on it, and you do not know whether to keep holding it.

She did not say no. She said yes. The booking died somewhere between "let's do it" and opening her banking app.

Why do clients go quiet when I ask for a deposit?

Usually because paying is harder than saying yes. "Let's do it" takes two seconds. Paying a deposit by bank transfer means leaving the chat, opening the app, adding you as a new beneficiary, copying four details, and waiting for an OTP. If she is at work or making supper, she thinks "I'll do it later". Later never comes.

Three other things make it worse:

  • No deadline. If you do not say how long you will hold the slot, there is no reason to pay today.
  • No reason. A list of bank details does not say what the money does. "Secures your slot and comes off the final price" does.
  • Money is tight. Lifestyle & Tech reported on 22 October 2026 that the Reserve Bank raised its rate by 25 basis points in September, taking the prime lending rate to 10.75%. People still book. They just think twice before money leaves their account.

How are South Africans paying now?

More and more, with a tap on their phone. MyBroadband reported on 18 October 2026 that Capitec's digital wallet users (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and Garmin Pay) grew 68% to 2.4 million, and that spending through those wallets rose 87% to R52.1 billion.

The same article says Discovery Bank found that in 2025, over half of card transaction values went through a digital wallet or a virtual card.

Your client is used to paying in two taps. Then your message asks her to do a full bank transfer by hand. The gap between those two experiences is where your deposit gets lost.

What should a deposit message say?

Five things, in one message, in plain words:

  1. The amount. One number, not a percentage she has to work out.
  2. What it secures. The date, the time, the service.
  3. That it comes off the final price, if it does. This makes it feel like part of the price, not an extra cost.
  4. How long you will hold the slot. A real time, such as "until tomorrow at 6pm".
  5. The easiest way to pay, and what to send back when it is done.

Here is the difference. The names, dates and prices are made up, to show how it works.

Instead of thisSend this
"Great! Here are my banking details: [bank details]""Lovely, Thandi! A R150 deposit secures Saturday 12 December at 10am, and it comes off your R450. I'll hold the slot until tomorrow at 6pm. Details are below. Send me a screenshot when it's done and I'll confirm."
"A 50% deposit is required to confirm.""To lock in 19 December for your family shoot, the deposit is R900. The other R900 is due on the day. Shall I send the payment link or my banking details?"

Each message on the right says what the money does, gives a deadline and ends with a small, clear next step.

The Reply Kit's Price-Reply Formula shows you how to send any price with a next step attached, in three versions for low, mid and premium prices.

A yes is not a booking. A paid deposit is. Your job is to make the gap between them as short as one tap.

Should I send banking details or a payment link?

Send whichever takes your client fewer taps. If your card machine provider or your bank gives you payment links, use one: she can pay with her card or digital wallet without adding you as a beneficiary.

If you only take bank transfers, make them painless:

  • Put your details in one short block she can copy in one go, under your message, not above it.
  • Tell her exactly what to use as the reference, such as her name and date.
  • Ask for a screenshot of the payment, so you are not checking your account ten times.
  • Say "Paid, thank you! You're booked" the moment it arrives. That message is what makes it feel real.

One more thing: send the details only once she has said yes to a specific slot. Sending bank details with the first price feels like a bill, not a booking.

What do I send if they still have not paid?

One reminder, before the hold time ends. Keep it short and kind, and give her an easy way out.

For example: "Hi Thandi, just a heads up that I'm holding Saturday 10am for you until 6pm today. Shall I keep it for you, or would another date suit you better?"

If the time passes with no reply, release the slot and tell her: "No stress, I've opened Saturday up again. If you still want a December date, just message me and I'll see what's left." That message keeps the door open without chasing.

How do I set this up in WhatsApp Business?

Once, in about ten minutes:

  1. Save your deposit message as a quick reply with a shortcut such as /deposit. Leave gaps for the name, date, amount and hold time.
  2. Save your banking details or payment link as a second quick reply, /pay.
  3. Add two labels: "Deposit asked" and "Paid". Move each chat across as it happens.
  4. Check the "Deposit asked" label once a day. Anyone near the end of their hold time gets the reminder.

How do I know if it is working?

Count it. Judge the change on numbers from your own inbox, not on how busy you feel.

NumberHow to count it
Deposits askedChats where someone said yes and you asked for a deposit
Deposits paidHow many of those paid before the hold time ended
Quiet chats reopenedChats that went silent and came back after your reminder
Close ratePaid bookings divided by inquiries

Use the new message on every deposit this week. On Friday, count how many you asked for and how many were paid. That number is yours, and it will tell you more than any article.

Questions owners ask

How much deposit should I ask for?

Enough that a no-show would not hurt you, and small enough that it does not feel like the full price. A fixed amount per service means you never have to work it out in the chat. Whatever you choose, give one number, not a percentage.

Is it rude to ask for a deposit on WhatsApp?

No. It protects your diary and tells the client their slot is real. It only feels rude when it arrives as a bare list of banking details. Say what it secures and that it comes off the final price, and most clients see it as normal.

How long should I hold a slot before the deposit is paid?

Long enough to pay without rushing, and short enough that you do not lose the slot. For most bookings that is the end of the next day. Say the time in your message, send one reminder before it ends, then release the slot.

What if the client says they will pay later?

Agree, and give a time. For example: "No problem, I'll hold it until tomorrow at 6pm. Just send the screenshot when it's done." A "later" with a time attached is a plan. A "later" with no time is a maybe.
