“Are You Doing a Black Friday Special?” Here Is How to Answer Without Cutting Your Price.

When a client asks "Are you doing a Black Friday special?", you do not have to cut your price. Reply kindly, say what your price is, give one reason to book now that costs you little (an add-on or a set slot), and end with a question. A bare "no" or a quick discount both end the chat early.

It starts every November. Your phone lights up between clients:

"Hi! Are you doing any Black Friday specials?"

You freeze for a second. If you say no, you sound stuck in your ways. If you say yes, you have just cut your price for someone who might have paid in full. So you send something like "Sorry, no specials this year." Two blue ticks. Nothing.

The question was not really about a discount. It was a buying signal. They are ready to spend, and they are asking you for a reason to spend it with you.

Why are clients asking for Black Friday specials?

Because every shop around them is shouting about deals. Briefly News reported on 22 October 2026 that Black Friday falls on 27 November this year, and that Google Trends shows search interest in Black Friday up 30% over the past three months compared with the same period in 2025. The same article says Massmart is promising deals of up to 50% off across Makro, Game and Builders.

Your client sees those numbers on every screen. Then she opens your chat. Of course she asks.

People are also spending more carefully. Standard Bank's festive travel data, published on 19 October 2026, describes "a clear shift from spending more to spending smarter". That report is about travel, not services, but the mood is the same: people still buy, they just want to feel they got good value.

Should a small service business do Black Friday at all?

Only if you choose to, and only on your terms. A salon, a photographer or a tutor is not Makro. You sell your time, and your time does not get cheaper in November. In fact, for many owners the festive diary is the busiest of the year.

Big discounts also do not guarantee happy buyers. Trade Intelligence surveyed shoppers after Black Friday 2025: more than four in five went in with high expectations, but only 36% said the deals truly impressed them.

Your client is not asking you to be cheaper. She is asking for a reason to book with you now. Give her the reason, and keep the price.

What do I say when a client asks for a Black Friday discount?

Use the same four steps every time:

  1. Thank them and answer straight. Do not dodge. Say whether there is a special or not.
  2. Say your price with what it includes. A price with a picture of the result feels fair. A bare number feels expensive.
  3. Give one reason to book now that costs you little. An add-on, a priority slot or a small extra, not a cut.
  4. End with a question. One easy question that moves to a date.

Here is the difference. The names, prices and services are made up, to show how it works.

Instead of thisSend this
"Sorry, no specials this year.""Hi Lerato, thanks for asking! I'm not cutting prices this year, but anyone who books a full set before 30 November gets a free lash bath with it. A full set is R550 and lasts about three weeks. Would a weekday or a Saturday suit you better?"
"Yes! 20% off everything.""Hi Sipho! My family shoot is R1,800 for an hour and 25 edited photos. For bookings made this month I'm adding five extra edits at no cost. December is filling up. Shall I send you the dates I have left?"
"What's your budget?""Good question! A single maths lesson is R250. Most parents book the 4-lesson pack at R900 to get ready for next term. Is your child in Grade 10 or Grade 11?"

Each reply on the right answers the question, explains the price and ends with a question. Not one of them cuts the price.

The Reply Kit's Price-Reply Formula shows you how to answer "how much?" so the price starts the conversation, in three versions for low, mid and premium prices.

What can I offer instead of a discount?

Something that feels generous to the client and costs you little. Good options:

  • An add-on. A free treatment, a few extra photos, a printed copy, a short extra session.
  • A pack. Three sessions for a little less than three singles. You get the bookings up front.
  • A priority slot. First pick of December dates for people who pay a deposit this month.
  • A smaller option. If the full service is too much right now, offer the starter version at its normal price.

If you do decide to run a special, set a real end date and stick to it. Do not say "only 3 left" unless only three are left. Clients remember, and they talk.

What if they still want money off?

Hold your price kindly and leave the door open. For example: "I get it, everyone's watching their money this year. My price stays at R550, but the free lash bath is yours if you book before 30 November. Want me to hold a slot while you think about it?"

If they go quiet, follow up once, two or three days later, with one new piece of information, such as a slot that opened up. Then stop. A client who only books at half price was never your client.

How do I set this up in WhatsApp Business?

Once, in about ten minutes:

  1. Write your November answer once and save it as a quick reply with a shortcut such as /special. Leave gaps for the name and the service.
  2. Add a label called "Asked for special". Put every chat that asks on it.
  3. Check the label every few days. Anyone who has not replied gets your one follow-up.

How do I know if it is working?

Count it. Judge the change on numbers from your own inbox, not on how busy November feels.

NumberHow to count it
Special requestsChats on the "Asked for special" label
Booked at your priceHow many of those booked without a price cut
Quiet chats reopenedChats that went silent and came back after your follow-up
Close ratePaid bookings divided by inquiries

Use the new reply on every "special?" message from today until the end of November. Then count. That number is yours, and it will tell you more than any article.

Questions owners ask

Should a small business give Black Friday discounts?

Only if you choose to and you have planned it. For most service businesses, an add-on or a pack works better than a price cut, because it keeps your price where it is and still gives the client a reason to book now.

How do I say no to a discount without losing the client?

Thank them, answer straight, say what your price includes and give one small reason to book now. Then end with an easy question, such as which day suits them. The question keeps the chat going after the no.

What can I offer instead of a discount?

An add-on, a pack of sessions, first pick of December dates for people who pay a deposit, or a smaller starter option at its normal price. Choose something that feels generous to the client and costs you little.

Is it rude to tell a client my price stays the same?

No. It is clear, and clear is kind. It only feels rude when it is a bare "no specials". Say it warmly, explain what they get, and offer the next step.
